History

Originally named Hawke's Bay Museum and Art Gallery, the first building here was constructed in 1865 with the aim to provide a cultural space to the Hawke’s Bay community. However the building was left severely damaged after the 1931 Hawke’s Bay earthquake and a new one was built in 1936 with community funds.

In 2010, MTG Hawke's Bay Tai Ahuriri was closed for a three year long renovation project and opened in September, 2013 with the inclusion of two old buildings on the site.
