Also known as Chalkio, the Halki village of Naxos is located in the heart of the Tragea region. The narrow alleys of the village lined with splendid neoclassical houses speak of the long history of power and wealth this village had in Greece. If you are a connoisseur of history, you can visit the various Venetian towers and grand Byzantine churches, such as the Agios Georgios church.
While taking a promenade along the olive-lined streets, you can observe the intricate architecture, even in the residential houses and appreciate the majestic villas of the town. One of the Naxos island's most elemental buildings is the Panagia Protothrone, one of the oldest churches on the island and presents other significant frescoes of the Byzantine and post-Byzantine period. You can also take beautiful pictures of the Gratsia and Markopolitis towers during the golden hours while reading about the history associated to them. Another local gem of the village is the Vallindras distillery, which lies in the center of the town and showcases how medicine was made historically in the quaint town. It was Naxos's ancient capital and principal administrative and trade centre.
