Located on the west coast of Naxos, the Naxos town or Chora Naxos is the island’s capital town and the largest region on the island.Despite being one of the most advanced towns of the Cycladic islands, it hasn’t lost its authentic charm melded with traditional Cycladic and Venetian elements. While taking a walk down a stone paved lane in the Naxos town, you can check out the line of boutiques, souvenir shops and local restaurants which serve delicious local cuisine.
This town is situated on a slightly elevated terrain above the island. The old town area has a marvellous Venetian castle, built by Marco Sanudo in 1207. You can visit the castle and appreciate the pentagon shaped structure whose huge walls fortify the town and contains various buildings, monuments and churches within it. While you are in the town, do not forget to check out the well-known sites such as the Portara, Archaeological museum, Ursulines school and merchant academy, beach of Agios Georgios, the majestic cathedrals and churches in the town as well as the busy but alluring port of Naxos.
