The Temple of Demeter is a 6th century temple dedicated to Demeter, the goddess of agriculture. It is located near the village of Sangrir. Now an archaeological site, the Temple of Demeter was converted into a Christian Basilica dedicated to Agios Ioanni using its old marble. However, it was restored to Demeter's temple again after an Arab invasion and now lives in its ruins.
The temple has unusual architecture, it was constructed directly on the top of the euthynteria without using a foundation block, and there is no stylobate for the pillars. One of the most picturesque Greek structures, the temple is set in a stunning environment in Sangri. Some more authentic findings from the temple's ruins are housed in a small museum near the archaeological site.
