Neue Galerie New York, New York City Overview

The Neue Galerie (German for New Gallery) is one of the newest additions to New York City’s famed Museum Mile and displays the works of German and Austrian artists from the early 20th century. Conceived over many decades and finally opened in 2001 by two passionate art collectors with a special fondness for this particular era of German and Austrian art, the museum’s collection of expressionist art and design from that region is one of the best in the world. The two galleries of the museum, divided simply on the basis of German and Austrian artists, house many famous works by well renowned artists like Gustav Klimt and Egon Scheile.

In the past the museum has hosted works by Vincent Van Gogh and permanently exhibits the painting ‘Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer’ by Gustav Klimt which was purchased at a record breaking USD 135 million in 2006 by the museum’s founder. Such is the museum’s commitment to its collection that there are multiple works of art that have been obtained from German and Austrian museums at great expense and effort so they can be housed in the Neue Galerie in New York. To complete the experience, the museum also houses a bookstore, a design shop and two Viennese cafes run by a famous Viennese restaurateur.
