The Bronx Museum of the Arts is located on the Grand Concourse in the Bronx district of New York city. A contemporary museum displaying art, photographs and prints by American artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, it also occasionally displays art from Africa, Asia and Latin America. Instituted in 1971 with the objective of attracting the diverse resident community of the Bronx and stirring interest about art amongst them, for the first 12 years The Bronx Museum comprised multiple small exhibits in multiple locations around the neighbourhood.
Since then it has been consolidated and undergone multiple expansions and now displays an impressive collection of contemporary art. The museum has a strong focus on community and holds exhibitions and networking events for upcoming local artists and even purchases their works, giving preference to artists from the Bronx district. Since 2012, the museum has stopped charging an entry fee and has started educational programs for visitors as well as local children and their parents. Due to its location in a historic district, it is also very easy to reach by subway and is surrounded by many historic and noteworthy buildings including Yankee Stadium.
