Wat Pho Chai

Wat Pho Chai, Nong Khai Overview

Largest and most important temple of Nong Khai, Wat Po Chai is known for its famous Buddha image. The bronze Buddha image of Luang Phor Phra Sai was one of the three made because of Lan Xiang king's daughter centuries ago. Besides this image, there are several large and colourful wall murals at Wat Po Chai which depict Siam's invasion of Laos and the three captured Buddha images. The temple is also home to many monks and other locals who live here praying to Phra Sai for health and wealth.

The statue of Buddha or Luang Phor Phra Sai is one of the most revered in the country. The head of the statue is made of gold, whereas, the body is constructed in bronze. The ut-sa-nit or the ornament on Buddha’s head is jewelled in rubies. The stunning statue is matched by the equally elaborate interior wall murals and paintings that depict the story of the journey of the statues. The three same statues were transported from Laos to the Mekong River. Laid on rafts, one drowned to the bottom of the sea during a storm while the other was transported to Wat Pathum Wanaram.

The temple is always bustling with devotees who light incense and pray at one of the holiest shrines in Thailand.
