History of Paonta Sahib

Shri Guru Gobind Singh founded Paonta Sahib, the original name of which was ‘Paontika’. Paon translates to feet and tika translates to becoming stable. According to legends, Shri Guru Gobind Singh and his horse had halted here, and he subsequently decided to stay here. He is believed to have been 16 years old at that time. He went on to visit here for four and a half years. It is interesting to note that he has never stayed in one place for so long in his whole life. During his stay over here, he engaged himself in hunting and training for martial arts. He also wrote several Sikh religious texts before proceeding to Anandpur Sahib. The Gurudwara Paonta Sahib contains a museum which displays several antiques and weapons that were used by Shri Guru Gobind Singh during his stay over here.
