Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum is known for its extensive collection of historical South African art. It is located at the entrance to St. George’s Park in Park Drive, Port Elizabeth. The Art Museum’s collection consists primarily of Eastern Cape and South African art and features many international pieces, including Indian miniatures and Chinese textiles.
The Africana exhibit is particularly popular for its works dating from 1790 to 1890, illustrating the links between South African and British art. The collections span two different buildings which frame the entrance to St. George’s Park. The exhibits rotate regularly. Research Library and Archives and a curio shop are also located within the museum. Formerly known as King George VI Art Gallery, it was first established in 1956 and renamed and reopened in December 2002.
