Chapel of Souls is one of Porto’s most visually striking churches, famous for its stunning azulejo tile-covered façade. Located on Rua de Santa Catarina, one of Porto’s busiest shopping streets, it one of the most photographed spots in Porto. The chapel's 15,947 blue-and-white tiles depict religious scenes in stunning detail and the inside features traditional Portuguese wooden altars and religious artwork.
Originally built in the 18th century, the Chapel of Souls was a modest structure dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria. In 1929, artist Eduardo Leite added the now-famous blue-and-white azulejo tiles, covering the entire exterior with intricate scenes depicting the lives of Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Catherine. These 15,947 hand-painted tiles, produced by the Viúva Lamego tile factory in Lisbon, give the chapel a breathtaking appearance and make it one of the most photographed landmarks in Porto.
