Church of Saint Francis is a remarkable blend of Gothic and Baroque architecture, renowned for its opulent gilded interiors and "Tree of Jesse" sculpture. Located in the historic Ribeira district, near the Palácio da Bolsa and a short walk from the Douro River, the church's underground catacombs house the remains of Franciscan monks and some of Porto's wealthiest families.
While the church's Gothic exterior is relatively austere, stepping inside reveals a breathtaking Baroque interior adorned with intricate wood carvings covered in approximately 300 kilograms of gold dust, earning it the nickname "The Golden Church." stablished around 1245 by Franciscan friars, the church has witnessed numerous transformations, reflecting Porto's evolving architectural styles and historical narratives.
