Clerigos Tower, Porto Overview

Clérigos Tower (Torre dos Clérigos) is one of Porto’s most famous landmarks, offering panoramic views of the city from its 75-meter-high bell tower. The granite tower, part of the Clérigos Church, features intricate carvings, a grand staircase, and a 360-degree observation deck at the top. It is one of Porto’s top tourist attractions, drawing visitors eager to climb its 225 steps for incredible vistas of the city.

Built between 1754 and 1763, the tower was designed by Nicolau Nasoni, an Italian architect who left a lasting mark on Porto’s Baroque architecture. Connected to the Clérigos Church, the tower was originally built as a bell tower and remains one of the tallest structures in Portugal from its time.  Inspired by Tuscan bell towers, Nasoni combined Italian and Portuguese architectural elements, creating a structure that is both elegant and imposing. The tower was originally built for the Brotherhood of Clérigos (Clergy), serving as both a religious symbol and a watchtower due to its commanding height.
