Luis I Bridge, Porto Overview

The Luís I Bridge, built in 1886, crosses the Douro River, linking Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. Designed by Théophile Seyrig, a student of Gustave Eiffel, it has two levels—the top level for the metro and pedestrians, and the bottom level for cars and pedestrians. Walking across the bridge offers amazing views of Porto’s old town, the Douro River, and the port wine cellars in Gaia.

The bridge is made of iron and features a large arch, making it an impressive engineering work of its time. Visitors can walk across the bridge to enjoy stunning views of Porto’s historic Ribeira district, the Douro River, and Gaia’s famous port wine cellars. The bridge is a popular spot for both tourists and locals, especially at sunset, when the city lights reflect on the water. Nearby, visitors can explore the Ribeira waterfront, take a boat tour, or ride the cable car in Gaia for another incredible view of the city.
