MAR Positano, Positano Overview

MAR Positano is an ancient Roman villa and archaeological site located beneath the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Discovered after a flood in 2003, the villa dates back to the 1st century AD and features remarkably preserved frescoes, mosaics, and artifacts. The museum’s exhibits showcasing artifacts recovered from the site, including pottery, statues, and coins.

The MAR Positano Villa Romana dates back to the 1st century AD, built during the Roman Imperial period as a luxurious seaside villa for elite families. It was buried under layers of volcanic ash following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, which also famously destroyed Pompeii and Herculaneum. This natural preservation, much like in those sites, helped protect the villa’s exquisite frescoes and mosaics. Rediscovered after a flood in 2003, the site has undergone extensive excavation and restoration, revealing vivid frescoes depicting mythological scenes and everyday Roman life.
