Jan Smuts House is the preserved home of the former Prime Minister of South Africa, Jan Smuts. It is located in Irene, about halfway between Pretoria and Johannesburg. The house has conserved the life of Jan Smuts through pictures, furniture and artefacts.
Smuts’ extensive and well-preserved library often attracts visitors. The house was initially a prefabricated wood and iron officers’ mess in Britain, from where it was taken to India, where Smuts purchased it. The Oubaas trail located onsite makes for a marvellous hike of 2.3 kilometres. There is a Place of Quiet dedicated to the byvoners found here when Jan Smuts purchased the home. There is also a small memorial to Prime Minister Smuts, a restaurant, antique shop, paintball and laser tag arena and a tea garden onsite. A market is held on the grounds on the first and last Saturday of every month.
