Pretoria Art Museum, located in Arcadia, is renowned for its collection of South African art. The City Council has curated this collection since 1930. They collect, document and conserve South African art and host international and national travelling exhibitions and educational sessions.
There are over 3000 pieces on display with well-known artists such as Anton von Wouv, Frans Oerder, and Irma Stern, as well as contemporary artists like Judith Mason, Sam Sam Nhlengethwa and Lucas Sithole. The museum’s exhibition features works from its permanent collection of artists who taught or studied at the University of Pretoria between 1986 and 1992. The Information Centre is an invaluable resource for learning about visual art, with plenty of art reference books and newspaper clippings on South African artists.
