Roodeplaat Dam Provincial Nature Reserve, Pretoria Overview

The Roodeplaat Dam Provincial Nature Reserve, originally called Pienaars Rivier Dam, is located northeast of Pretoria on the shores of the Roodeplaat Dam. It is also an outdoor recreation facility popular for several water activities alongside its wildlife. Over 250 species of birds, including Black herons, Hammerkops and Ospreys, can be seen here, making it ideal for bird watching.

Game viewing is popular here since the reserve has animals like zebras, kudus, warthogs, black-backed jackals and more. It is an ideal place for walking or hiking owing to its many trails and picnicking since picnic tables are on the southern banks of the dam. The southern banks are better for water sports like sailing, canoeing, freshwater angling and fishing. There are a few basic campsites on this side of the dam. Each shore has its entrance. The reserve is a good site for nature photography.
