Lake Wakatipu, a glacier-carved lake in Queenstown, is New Zealand’s longest lake, stretching 80 km in a lightning-bolt shape. Surrounded by the Remarkables mountain range, it’s renowned for its scenic beauty and the unique rhythmic rise and fall of its water level, known as the lake’s "heartbeat." Visitors can enjoy activities like kayaking, cruises on the historic TSS Earnslaw steamboat, and lakeside trails starting from Queenstown's waterfront.
As a result of the lake’s unusual shape, Lake Wakatipu experiences a sort of ‘tide’ that causes the water levels to rise up and down rhythmically every half an hour. Maori folk tales speak of a massive beast that was burned but left its heart behind, in the depths of the lake, still beating which is responsible for the tide of the lake.
