History of Gandhi Museum

The Gandhi Museum was formerly the location of Alfred High School, also known as Mohandas Gandhi High School which dates back to October 17, 1853. This was a prestigious English-medium education centre, built by a politically connected individual called Kernel Singh while the country was still a colony of the British Empire. The institution was attended by none other than Mahatma Gandhi in 1887.

The decision to turn this historical site into a museum came about in 2017, an intention that was brought into reality on September 30, 2018, Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary. The museum, under the supervision of Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) and the Gujarat Tourism department, was inducted by Narendra Modi (Prime Minister of India), Vijay Rupani (Chief Minister of Gujarat) and Nitin Patel (Deputy Chief Minister).

Exhibitions at the Gandhi Museum

Ground Floor - consists of galleries 1 to 18 which focus on the life and achievements of the great Mahatma Gandhi.

First Floor - consists of galleries 19-39 which highlight Gandhi ideologies and their place in today’s world, as well as journals, speeches, letters and interactive activities.

Souvenir Shop - managed by Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati Ashram, providing mementoes that serve as a reminder of your trip to the museum, and informative books based on a number of interesting topics including Gandhi’s philosophy.

Charkha Eatery - a food court providing appetizing vegetarian delicacies and beverages, sure to satisfy all your cravings after a tour of the museum.

Light & Sound Show - the museum features a spectacular light and sound show using modernized 3D technology, based on the life of the revered Mahatma Gandhi. With a duration of twenty minutes the show is organized on a daily basis from 7:00 PM to 7:20 PM, although tickets for the sam must be purchased before 5:00 PM. Visitors who have purchased a museum ticket are eligible to attend the show free of any additional cost.
