The Archeological Museum of Rethymnon is located within the Saint Francis church in the centre of Rethymnon's old town. The museum exhibits archaeological findings and excavations from ancient sites in Rethymnon and is a must-visit. The collections range from the Neolithic and Minoan periods to the Roman and Hellenistic periods. The exhibits include pottery, marble sculptures and sceneries, coins, tools, weapons, jewellery, Minoan figurines, and many more.
Some of the most important exhibits you must see are the helmet covered in boar teeth and the reliquaries from the post-Minoan era cemetery of Armeni, the statue of Aphrodite from Argyroupoli, the seals and collections of gold jewellery and coins, including some of the oldest navigation instruments. The exhibition was initially located within the Pentagon Bastion of the Fortezza and is now temporarily housed within the Saint Francis Church due to restoration work within the fort. The museum was founded in 1887. Fortezza of Rethymnon, Neratze Mosque, and the Centre for Byzantine Art are nearby attractions. Several restaurants, cafes, and tavernas specialising in Cretan cuisine are in close vicinity.
