The Fortezza of Rethymnon is a 16th-century Venetian fortress on the Paleokastro hill, located in the heart of the Rethymnon Old town. The fort offers a great vista of Rethymnon town and the sunset. The fort is home to Sultan Ibrahim's mosque, formerly known as the Cathedral of St Nicolas. Along with the museum, there are a few barracks, a church, cisterns, an armoury, a gift shop, and several vaults within the Fortezza.
The fort was built in 1573 and was used as a residential area during the world wars. It was under Turkish and Venetian rule at different points in history. The Asteria Open Air Cinema, Rimondi Venetian Fountain, Neratze Mosque, and the Archeological Museum of Rethymnon are nearby attractions.
