Mount Psiloritis, or Mount Ida, is the highest summit in Crete, Greece, with an elevation of roughly 2400m. It is a sacred mountain in Greek Mythology as it is believed to be the birthplace of Zeus, the king of gods. Visitors can undertake a challenging 3-hour hike to the summit. The hiking trail starts at the Psiloritis Natural Park and is clearly marked but has a rocky pathway.
The rich flora and fauna and snow fields make for a serene hike. Reach the peak and explore the ruins of the Chapel of the Holy cross. Once at the summit, hikers can enjoy a picturesque panoramic view of the mountains and the Aegean Sea. It is located 52 km from Rethymnon and can be reached via a car, taxi, or bus within an hour and a half from the city. Of the two hiking routes, Zeus’s Cave falls on the Nida Plateau route. Visitors can also opt for guided group tours from Rethymnon.
