The National Museum of Iceland gives an overview of Iceland's history through its diverse displays. Located near lake Tjornin, the most famous display would be the Valþjófsstaður Door, a door from medieval times. It is a historically significant piece representing the Lion-Knight story.
The museum currently boasts over 2000 permanent pieces as well as temporary exhibitions. It offers a complete picture starting from the early settlements to the modern era. It houses items from as early as 12th and 13th century and offers free English-language tours to visitors.
The museum got established in 1863 under the name Antiquarian Collection. It acquired its current name in 1911 and is now one of the best museums in Iceland. The National Museum of Iceland also has The Culture House as a part of it. It is a historical building with a rich history and is currently used primarily for exhibits. Tourists can explore the artefacts and artworks from many centuries and opt for guided museum tours.
