The Snaefellsjokull National Park is situated at the edge of Snaefellsnes in the western part of the country. One of the dominant features of this park is the Snaefellsjokull glacier which enhances the surroundings. Some of the things to do here are glacier hiking and birdwatching.
Another interesting thing to observe is the Buðahraun lava field which encompasses the glacier. This park is just the right place for those deeply interested in geology and volcanology. This park is an incredible place to get a closer and clearer view of the coastline, beach and ocean, and sea creatures around the sea. Bird watching too is a prominent activity in this park. Many tourists also take up jeep tours and glacier hiking which makes it a pleasant and enjoyable experience for them.
It is the first national park to extend from the top of the mountain and entirely down the ocean. The Snaefellsjokull National Park was launched on 28th June 2001. The aim of this park is to safeguard and maintain the distinct landscapes, indigenous flora and fauna and historical artefacts too.
