Lindos Acropolis

Acropolis of Lindos, Rhodes Island Overview

The Acropolis of Lindos is an ancient ruin dating back to the 4th century BC, situated on a 116-meter cliff overlooking the Aegean Sea. Offering a picturesque view from the hilltop, the Lindos Acropolis consists of a beautiful Hellenistic period gallery, a St. John Byzantine Church, and Knights’ headquarters that are worth admiring. It is accessible only on foot or by donkeys.

The site is dotted with historical monuments such as the Temple of Athena Lindia, the Propylaea, and the Hellenistic Stoa. The site also comprises the castle's battlements and two well-preserved towers built in the early 14th century by the Knights of St John. The Acropolis of Lindos is more than just the main temple complex. The surrounding area includes several notable sites:

  • Theatre: Situated below the Temple of Athena, this ancient structure features a circular orchestra and hollowed-out seats.
  • Four-portico Building: This structure, intended for religious ceremonies, could hold 1,500-1,700 spectators.
  • Boukopion: An ancient sacrificial site identified by inscriptions on the rocks, located northeast of the Acropolis.
  • Cemeteries: The surrounding area hosts ancient cemeteries with notable monuments like the Tomb of Kleoboulos and the Archokrateion.

How to Reach

By Foot: A steep, stepped footpath from Lindos Village climbs the 116-meter-high headland to the Acropolis. It’s a short but intense hike, so packing water and a hat for shade is advisable.
Donkey Rides: For those who prefer not to walk, donkey rides are available from the village entrance for a small fee. However, visitors should consider the treatment of the animals before choosing this option.
