Hospital of the Knights

Archaeological Museum, Rhodes Island Overview

The Archaeological Museum of Rhodes is located in Old Town Rhodes, on the popular Street of Knights. The museum is housed in a building that once was the hospital of the Knights of Saint John. Today, it exhibits various artefacts found in Ancient Ialyssos and Ancient Kamiros. It also houses the famous Head of Helios, featured in 2011 on the album cover of Floral Shoppe by Macintosh Plus.

It showcases artifacts from excavations across Rhodes and surrounding islands, offering insights into ancient civilizations. These artifacts span over 7,000 years of local history, from the Mycenaean era to Roman times. Highlights include the Aphrodite Bathing marble statue, wall-mounted mosaics, and a reconstructed burial site from 1630 BC. The ground floor showcases ordinances from the Ottomans and Knights periods. In contrast, the first floor displays altars, sarcophaguses, statues and steles from Ialyssos and Kamiros. This impressive structure, constructed in 1440 and completed in 1948, has undergone renovations over the centuries, particularly by the Italians in the early 20th century.
