Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes, better known as Kastello, is a magnificent historical landmark located at the end of the Street of the Knights in the Old Town of Rhodes. Of the 158 original rooms, 24 are open to the public. Highlights include the Grand Reception Hall, the Waiting Room, the Ballroom, and the elegant Music Room.
The site previously functioned as a Byzantine palace, headquarters, and fortress. When inside, you will discover the detailed mosaics decorated on the ceilings and walls. There is a beautiful mosaic design of Medusa as well. The rooms in the palace are adorned with antique furniture, exquisite marbles, sculptures, carpets, and Oriental vases. One of the rooms in the palace is called the Grand Master of the Knights with a portrait of the Grand Master, a wooden bench and some uniforms. Another room is the chapel and the outdoor courtyard and gardens. You will also find the famous statue of Laocoon with snakes, here in Kastello.
The ground floor hosts two permanent exhibitions. "Rhodes from the 4th c. AD to its Capture by the Ottoman Turks (1522)" showcases medieval artifacts, while "Rhodes, 2,400 Years" presents the ancient history of Rhodes through archaeological finds. The Hellenic Heritage Store offers a variety of souvenirs, publications, and faithful replicas of museum exhibits.
