Must-Know Travel Essentials

All roads lead to Rome, the capital and largest city in Italy. It served as a millennium-long center of power, culture, and religion and was the epicenter of history's greatest civilizations. In its approximately 2500-year history, the city has profoundly impacted the world.

The ancient Romans referred to Rome as the "Eternal City" because they felt that the city of Rome would always stand no matter what happened in the rest of the world. Exploring the historic heart on foot, surrounded by magnificent structures and massive remnants, takes you back to the "glory that was Rome."

The old saying "Rome wasn't built in a day" is validated when you set foot in this magnificent city. Rome is mentioned among the world's most famous destinations because it is the pinnacle of beauty and history. Warm colors and old architectural types characterize the city. The unique tourist sites in Rome will enchant you with the grandeur of a bygone period.

The problem with Rome, as we've heard repeatedly, is that there is so much to see within the city limits that planning a vacation can be overwhelming. In such a case, our Holidify Rome trip packages are here to help. Our devoted team of professionals has worked hard to bring you the finest of Rome. Aside from that, we specialize in designing customized travel packages that best suit our customers' interests.

Places to visit in Rome

  • Colosseum: Remember the Microsoft Windows wallpaper of a round vintage stadium? That's the Colosseum. The Colosseum in Rome is an oval amphitheater. It's a symbolic feature of the Roman Empire and one of the most astonishing masterpieces ever. With more than 80 doors, the giant architecture can house over 50,000 spectators. It is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful spots to visit in Rome,  known for games, gladiatorial combats, and wild animal fights. A piece of the theater is now open to the public. Unfortunately, natural disasters and vandalism have razed and damaged the rest.
  • Vatican City: The Vatican, officially known as the State of the Vatican City, is the capital of the Roman Catholic Church. Vatican City, the world's smallest independent country, is well-known for its architectural marvels. This small region has its unique beauty, as it is densely packed with historical and religious structures. The location draws history buffs and pilgrims.  The city-state has beautiful scenic locations such as the Vatican Museums, the Vatican Gardens, the Sistine Chapel, and the Basilica of St. Peter.
  • Roman Forum: Located in the center of the old city, the Roman Forum is an archaeological site in Rome with breathtaking remnants of ancient monuments, temples, administrative structures, and public areas. In earlier times, this place was the focal point of all religious, political, public, and commercial activities in the Roman Empire. Presently, it serves as a prominent tourist attraction in modern-day Rome.
  • Pantheon: Pantheon is a Greek term meaning "temple of all gods." Once a Roman temple, the Pantheon in Rome City is now one of the city's most important Catholic churches. The Pantheon has marked the pinnacle of Rome's greatness for almost two thousand years. Its story is intimately related to the Eternal City.
  • Trevi Fountain: The most excellent Baroque fountain, Trevi Fountain in Rome, is known worldwide for its architectural importance. When visitors visit this calm fountain, one of the things they do is throw pennies into it. This is thought to be lucky. Around 3,000 euros are collected daily in the fountain to subsidize markets for Rome's underprivileged.
  • The Palatine Hill: Palatine, one of Rome's seven hills, is frequently called the heart of the former Roman Empire. Numerous historic structures constructed during the time of the old empire can be seen on Palatine Hill. These include the Houses of Livia and Augustus, the Temple of Cybele, the Temple of Apollo Palatinus, and the House of Tiberius, which comprise most of the Hill's architectural ensemble. Visit this scenic location to learn more about the Roman Empire and its legacy.
  • The Borghese Museum and Gallery: A perfect place for art and history lovers, the Borghese Museum in Rome was founded in 1902. The art gallery contains a sizable collection of Borghese sculptures, paintings, and artifacts. Over two stories, there are twenty-one rooms in The Gallery. In addition, various classical sculptures, especially those created by Bernini, are found at the Borghese Museum.
  • St. Peter’s Basilica: Known as the hub of Christianity, this splendid location is a popular tourist sight. This famous basilica houses numerous works of Renaissance and Baroque art and is a favorite destination for history buffs. It takes visitors on a tour of the rich and impressive Roman past. St. Peter's Basilica was the tallest structure of its time when it was initially constructed. Currently, it is the church with the tallest dome in the world. The building's impressive height offers a stunning perspective of the entire city.
  • Saint Peter's Square: St. Peter's Square, also called "Piazza San Pietro," is in the middle of the city. It acts as a gateway to the city of the Vatican. Right in front of the square stands the St. Peter's Basilica, the second-largest Catholic basilica in the world. Both the Basilica and the Square have Saint Peter's name - a Christian apostle regarded as the first Pope. The Vatican City and St. Peter's Square are significant for Catholic pilgrims.
  • National Gallery of Ancient Art in Barberini Palace: The Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica, also known as the National Gallery of Ancient Art, is a museum of art in Rome. The museum is famous for its works of art and paintings by some of the most well-known artists in the world. The majority of the paintings in this gallery date from before 1800. It is one of Rome's most prominent art galleries and is no less a haven for all art enthusiasts. It houses over 5000 paintings, works of art, sculptures, and examples of medieval art.

Things to do in Rome

  • Go museum hopping: Rome is built on a rich cultural and heritage legacy. Rome museums are amongst the best in the world, including the Vatican Museums, the Borghese Gallery and Museum, etc. The National Museum of Rome is organized into four significant collections housed in several palazzos. You may easily spend a day visiting museums rich in artistry, culture, and history.
  • Taste the best of Roman cuisine: A visit to the Eternal City would be incomplete without food indulgence, in addition to the monuments, temples, and churches. More than just a delectable culinary experience, the city's cuisine studies Roman history. The Romans may greatly emphasize local products and ingredients as a historical and cultural preservation. Some must-try delicacies are pizza al taglio, carbonara, pasta all'Amatriciana, cacio e pepe, and many more.
  • Enjoy the nightlife in Rome: Rome will never let you down when it comes to having a good time and making the most of your night out. Explore hangout venues near you to enjoy some fine beverages while meeting like-minded folks. Rome has it all: quaint cafés, authentic wine bars, exquisite clubs, and upbeat music venues. These nightlife hotspots are often visited by both international and local visitors, who, by the way, dress and dance their hearts out on party nights.
  • Get preached by Pope: Pope Francis I attends the weekly audience in either St Peter's Square or Nervi Hall every Wednesday. He greets pilgrims and groups in their languages, offers heavenly insight to the audience, and then leads them in collective prayer. Religious visitors appreciate the opportunity for spiritual meditation.
  • Stroll through the Vatican Gardens: The verdant Vatican Gardens have been a place of escape, leisure, and recreation for the Pope and those who have known about it for over a thousand years! Visitors enjoy arriving on a bright day, turning off their phones, and meditating. It brings peace amidst the hustle and bustle of the Italian city.
  • Head to the Amalfi Coast: Amalfi Coast is defined by colorful buildings on cliffs plunging into turquoise waters. The Amalfi Coast is well-known for its beautiful sea-facing towns, hills, and beaches. It is famous for its beautiful coastline and vibrant villages with narrow alleys. Many villages on the Amalfi Coast have a rich history, with important historical and artistic sites.

Best time to visit Rome

Since Rome is in central and western Italy, you can expect high temperatures and plenty of pleasant sunshine all year. Summer, between June and May, is a perfect time to visit, but know that July gets extremely hot and is also considered the hottest month. Consequently, the summer session sees the highest footfall and significant growth in the tourism business.

The weather is mild during the fall and spring seasons, and there aren't too many tourists in the city. Both seasons allow guests to tour different parts of the city, such as museums and monuments, which are busy during the peak summer season. However, the winter witnessed a fall in Rome's tourism, with few visitors.

Ideal duration for Rome

A week would be a perfect amount of time to properly appreciate what Rome has to offer. Visitors can see all the sites and immerse themselves in a foreign culture without feeling rushed. Furthermore, you'll have plenty of opportunities to put yourself in the local way of life, from savoring regional foods to visiting cultural events.

Those who cannot afford a weeklong holiday can still visit Rome for 3 to 4 days. Nonetheless, Rome will leave a lasting impression on your emotions even in a shorter period.

How to reach Rome

Rome has fair air connectivity. Leonardo da Vinci Airport is located around 30 km southwest of the city. The other airport is Ciampino, which handles most local and international flights. It is located approximately 15 kilometers southeast of the city. In addition, several airlines connect Rome to the rest of the world. You can choose a carrier based on your budget and convenience.

You may easily take a bus from the airport to a stop near your hotel or the central station in less than an hour.

There is no need to worry about transportation once you arrive in Rome. Rome is well connected by rail to Italy's and Europe's main cities. Roma Termini is the principal railway station. Aside from that, the city features a well-connected metro and road system.

Rome has a city tax called the "tourist tax" (Tassa di Soggiorno), which varies based on accommodation type:
  • €3–€7 per person per night (based on hotel category).
  • The fee applies for a maximum of 10 nights.
  • It is usually paid directly at the hotel and is not included in online booking prices.

Where to stay in Rome for the first time?

For first-time visitors, the best areas to stay in Rome are:
