Lying between Getreidegasse and Salzburger Dom, Alter Markt is the historic old marketplace of the Austrian city of Salzburg. It is known for locally made souvenirs and also served as a festive setting for dances, events, and annual markets. The smallest house in Salzburg is also located here.
It was built in 1280 and is the oldest weekly market in the city. Locally made items such as souvenirs and, more popularly, Mozartkulgen (Mozart Balls) are sold here. St. Florian Fountain is the centrepiece of the entire market, which was built in 1488. The Alter Markt is enclosed by rows of stately townhouses which have been there since the Middle Ages. Tourists also visit the smallest house in Salzburg, located in this historic city centre.
