Nonnberg Abbey, situated on the eastern foothills of Festungsburg beneath the Salzburg fortress, is a Benedictine monastery and the oldest nunnery in the German-speaking world. It was also a prime shooting location for the academy award-winning movie, "Sound of Music".
It was founded by Saint Bishop Rupert between 712 and 715. The Abbey’s Gothic period-inspired architecture and exquisite collection of wall paintings and miniatures attract many tourists. In addition, the nuns of the collegiate church of Nonnberg Abbey are famous for their early morning Gregorian chants and the small ceramics manufactory they run. It is also a must-visit for all ‘Sound of Music fans as some of the most pivotal scenes take place inside the abbey.
