Located near the port of Vathy, close to the Town Hall and Central Park, Samos Archaeological Museum is the town's top attraction. The museum collection includes ancient sculptures from the Classical and Hellenistic Era, Geometric and Archaic Era bronze, ivory, and wood objects, pottery from Rhodes and Laconia, statuette, Ionian columns, and sarcophagi from Egypt, Persia, and Assyria, and prehistoric objects from the Heraion excavations.
The museum is housed in two buildings. The old neoclassical building, built in 1912, is called Paschaleios Archaiofilakio (safekeeping of ancient objects). The new one, donated by the car company Volkswagen, was inaugurated in 1987. The colossal kouros of the 6th century BC, the Genelous group of statues, the marble votive offering of Cheramyes to Hera, and the Laconian Ivory reliefs from the 7th century BC are some of the must-see displays.
