The Tunnel of Eupalinos is an ancient engineering marvel built over 2500 years ago. There are three itineraries to visit the tunnel. Book in advance because there are only six different time slots throughout the day for the full itinerary. When it was constructed in the 6th century BC by Greek engineer Eupalinos of Megara, the tunnel was a historic feat. It is one of the two tunnels in history that were excavated from both ends simultaneously.
The tunnel is 1036m long, 1.80m high, and 1.80m wide, but it can get as narrow as 1.50m in height and width at some places. Itinerary 1 is 20 minutes long, allows 20 visitors, and covers only 185m of the tunnel. It has a narrow, steep stairway that can be difficult to navigate. Itinerary 2 is 40 minutes long, allows 15 visitors, and covers 424m. Here you can see the Byzantine-era cistern towards the Agiades end. The third itinerary covers the full length of the tunnel. It allows only 10 visitors at a time and runs for an hour. It can be accessed from both South Entrance and North Entrance. Expect the tunnel to be cold, humid, and slippery, especially in the deeper parts. Running through Mount Kastro, this tunnel served as an aqueduct for around 1100 years to supply fresh water from Agiades spring to Samos.
