Piazza della Cisterna

Piazza della Cisterna, San Gimignano Overview

Piazza della Cisterna is a historic triangular-shaped square located at the intersection of the ancient Via Francigena and the route connecting Pisa to Siena, in San Gimignano. This piazza has been a central hub for markets, festivals, and public gatherings since its construction in the 13th century. It is a perfect starting point for exploring the town's other attractions, like the adjacent Piazza del Duomo. It sis surrounded by several local shops, cafes, and gelaterias.

Its name derives from the central cistern (well), built in 1287 and later expanded in 1346 under the governance of Podestà Guccio Malavolti. The well, adorned with a travertine octagonal base, served as a vital water source for the town's inhabitants. Surrounded by medieval towers and noble residences, Piazza della Cisterna showcases the rich architectural heritage of San Gimignano. Notable structures include the Ardinghelli Towers, belonging to the prominent Ghibelline family, and the Torre del Diavolo (Devil's Tower), shrouded in local legend. The square's brick pavement, laid out in a herringbone pattern, adds to its historic charm.
