Vasota Fort, Satara Overview

Situated at a distance of 56 km from Satara in Maharashtra, Vasota Fort is perched at a height of 1171 m near the village of Bamnoli. Considered to be a popular trekking spot, the fort is also known to be an ideal picnic spot in the region. It is enveloped in dense green forests and aside from the thrilling adventurous activity, you can also enjoy picturesque views of the valley amidst bounteous nature.

Located on the banks of Shivsagar Lake, the picturesque fort is surrounded by water on all three sides. Once known to be a seat of royalty, the fort was built in a Maharashtrian style architecture but is currently in ruins. It has been divided into three sections and also houses two temples. Apart from trekking, you can also enjoy other adventure activities like mountaineering, rock climbing, and hiking etc.

What to See at Vasota Fort

The fort is divided into three sections- Old Fort, New Fort and Nageshwar. Like the name suggests, Old Fort is the old part of the fort and New Fort is the new part. Nageshwar is a cave carved out of the rocks. Although some areas of the fort is in ruins but some parts like the bastions are in full well condition. The fort has been built in a traditional Maharashtrian style architecture. It also has Mahadev temple and the Nageshwar temple in addition to the Hanuman Temple which is situated at the entrance. There is another U shaped cliff near the fort called the Babu Kada which is also a famous trekking spot.

Tips

  1. The first boat to the base village starts at 8:30 AM in the morning. Make sure you finish the trek and return by 5:30 PM as it is not allowed to stay in the forest after 5:30 PM. 
  2. Vasota Fort is under Sahyadri Tiger Reserve so all visitors need to acquire permission from forest office of Bamnoli before undertaking the trek. This office opens at 8:00 AM in the morning.
  3. You can carry a bottle of water but make sure to not litter the place.
  4. It is advised to trek in groups as the forest also has wild animals.
  5. All bags are checked before boarding the boat. So keep clear of matchsticks, lighters, alcohol, knives etc.
  6. Remember to wear comfortable footwear preferably sports shoes with a good grip.
  7. Carry energy drinks for retain your energy levels.
  8. Avoid wearing jewellery or carrying any valuables.

How to Reach

Vasota Fort comes under Sahyadri Tiger Reserve so all those visiting need to acquire permission from forest office of Bamnoli before undertaking the trek. From Bamnoli, one needs to travel to Met Indavali which is the base village for the trek. This journey can be completed in a boat that starts from Bamnoli at 8:30 AM.
