Things to Do and Activities at the Park

Shamirpet Deer Park can be best explored by taking a walk around it. The park is divided into two areas: the visitors’ area and the core area. Tourists are allowed to stay in the Visitors’ area only. There are high chances that you might find many deer strolling in the park while you are in the park. The park has vast species of deer, which you can watch in their natural habitat. The park also has a watchtower and a viewpoint giving the visitors a perfect view of the Shamirpet Lake. One might also find some deer near the lake that would be there for quenching the thirst.

Other activities include boating, trekking and bouldering. Boating in the lake is the perfect way of manifesting the beauty of the lake. You can also do bird watching here since the lake attracts many bird species towards it. Shamirpet Deer Park is spread over 54 acres and has various species of wildlife. It also has an observational tower from which one can easily see the beautiful Shamirpet Lake. The lake attracts many birds and has a rocky terrain along with lush green surroundings. There are also some forest cottages near the lake for the tourists. The park has a wide species of many animals, but since it is a deer park, the main wildlife attractions are the Blackbuck and the Chital Deer. There is thick vegetation around the park, and the park is filled with a vast area of deciduous forest. The huge towering trees and the multi-coloured flowers catch the intrigue of the visitors. The forest trees (Butea monosperma), the yellow bells (Tecoma Stans), Pongamia trees and the Ranawara trees are the significant flora of the park. Peafowl, mountain lizards, civet cats, spotted deer, wild boars, porcupines, centipedes, millipedes, bullfrog, common toads and a variety of butterflies are among the significant fauna of the park. The cobalt blue lake and the highly deciduous Shamirpet Park are a perfect home to all its flora and fauna.

History of Shamirpet Deer Park

After being built in 1971 by the Nizams, the Shamirpet Deer Park was allotted to forest department in 1975 and was inaugurated in 1980 by former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Dr M. Chenna Reddy. The park is also known as Jawahar Deer Park by the name of India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

Best time to Visit Shamirpet Deer Park

The park can be visited any month of the year but try avoiding the months of May, June and July since the temperature is quite high; thus the park doesn’t offer the best of its experiences in these months. It is advised to visit the park in the months when the weather is pleasant in Hyderabad.

Since the park is located far away from the city, the government of Telangana has built a resort in the park to cater to the needs of its visitors. The resort near the lake is named as Haritha Lake Resort which offers quite good dining facilities and a variety of cuisines for its visitors. The resort also provides staying facilities to its visitors and has both A/C and Non-A/C cottages according to the preferences of the visitors.

How To Reach Shamirpet Deer Park

Located in Shamirpet, Medchal-Malkajgiri District of Telangana, the park is located at a distance of 23 kilometres from the city of Secunderabad. The nearest railway station is the Secunderabad Railway Station which is at a distance of 23 kilometres to the Shamirpet Deer Park. This distance can be covered either by cabs or buses. Buses with route no. 211A and 211S from the Secunderabad Junction go very frequently to Shamirpet. You can also visit the nearby temple of Goddess Katta Maisamma once you are here. The temple is very famous among the local people there and is quite crowded on weekends.
