It is located at an elevation of 2050m, south of Semarang in Indonesia. The mountain is basically a stratovolcano of Holocene age of rock, with two active fumarole on its southern flanks. The mountain also has two towns on its southern and eatern side. Ambarawa on the southern end while Ungaran on the Eastern side. The go to tourist spots on the mountain are the Gedong Songo temple complex, Bandugan and its surroundings, and the lake of Rawa Pening on the southeastern end of the mountain.
The mountain is situated some 45 kms away from the city of Semarang and the drive itself offers you a scenic panorama of the lush greenery. Climbing the mountain might get difficult for beginners, especially on the steeper corners. Once you start off from the Mawar Basecamp, the trail gets easier. The forest path is mostly moist so it is advisable to wear hard spiky boots to get a firm grip on the ground. Sunrises in Mount Ungaran is really beautiful and photographic. One may sit here with family and friends to picnic during daytime. There are warm springs in some places because of the volcanic activity, Lake of Rawa being one of the magnificent spring lakes to just sit by and dip your feet in it.
