Sweet Falls

One of the steepest and the most mesmerizing falls of the country, the Sweet Falls is located about 5 km from Happy Valley in Shillong. At a height of 96 metres, it is often touted as the most stunning yet most dangerous waterfall. The route to the waterfall is not maintained and is quite treacherous, surrounded by slippery stones resulting in some tragic stories. Unlike the tiered waterfalls of Meghalaya, the Sweet Falls a thick rush of water falling from a great height making it impossible to stand below or take a bath in the falls. Ironically, Sweet Falls is believed to be haunted by the local populace - they believe that if people visit the site in odd numbers, they return back in even numbers.

The Sweet Falls of Shillong is a popular picnic spot surrounded by verdant greenery and filled with the sounds of the chirping birds. There is also a butterfly museum a mini zoo near the waterfalls. There is a railing at the site of the waterfall but it is too weak to lean on. The Sweet Falls has been marked a danger zone by the local government as it has been the site of some tragic deaths and suicide in the past. These tragic and haunted stories have resulted in less tourist traffic at Sweet Falls which might be seen as a blessing by some people (they get to enjoy the beautiful surroundings in comparative serenity).
