Sigandur, Shimoga (Shivamogga) Overview

A small, beautiful town, located in the Taluka District of Karnataka, is Singandur. Locally known also as "Sigandooru", the city is well known for its Shri Chowdeshwari Temple that is dedicated to the Goddess Chowdeshwari. Present on the banks of the Sharavati River, the temple is a must-visit for many devotees from all over the world. The Chowdamma Devi, as the goddess is referred to, is an ethereal being who punishes thieves for stealing and protects her devotees from losing items to thievery. Surrounded by lush greens and the Linganamakki dam, on three sides, the Sigandur village is encircled by the Holy Sharavati River.

It is a common holy practice for visitors to bathe in the sacred river Sharavati, during the annual festival held in the month of January. This sacred village is one of its kind since no other kshetras offer this form of worship. A significant item called the "board of Shri Deviya Rakshane Ide", once placed in a home, will provide the goddess's pure protection of objects, buildings, land, and gardens as well as the people themselves.

History of the Temple

The 300-year-old tale that is believed to be the culture and origin of this sacred spot is unique in it’s honorable and untainted simplicity. Similar to all cultural beliefs that make the Indian practice of god and goddess worship so special and individual, this temple’s tradition is one that perfectly combines divinity and human reverence. Once, a man named Sheshappa went into the forest to hunt. However, he ended up lost within the jungles and decided to take rest beneath a tree.

While under the tree, he fell asleep and had a dream, where the 'Mother' (the Goddess Chowdeshwari) visited him and asked him to build a temple in her name. This forest in which he had his dream was present at the banks of the Sharavati river. He told a Brahmin "Duggajja" about his dream, and together they built the temple now known as the Chowdeshwari temple. Seshappa is the managing trustee, and "Duggajja" is the chief priest.

Worship of the Goddess

Since the Goddess is thought to be the one who protects her disciples from thieves, most visitors are devotees who pray for the blessings of the goddess "Mother". She is known to bring appropriate consequences to the stealers that cause pain and loss to the worshippers and return the stolen belongings. Many devotees keep the board known as "Shri Deviya Rakshane Ide" in their homes or near their land, as a form of the Devi, to keep the thieves away.

It is believed to shield gardens, land, and items as well. Many who have successfully received blessings from the Goddess have had their lost items returned to the exact place from which it was taken. Some even prefer praying to the Mother than trusting the Governmental law to protect their rights.

Annual Fair

Held on the 14th and 15th of January, this annual fair that is dedicated to the Goddess Chowdeshwari is famously attended by thousands of visitors every year. Celebrated on Makar Sankranti, this is a renowned and auspicious time to pray to the Devi with the masses and gain blessings and protection for yourself, your family as well as your lands and belongings.

It is standard practice to bathe in the banking Sharavati River, as a method of communication and prayer. The goddess, also known as "Sigandureshwari", is thought to listen to every prayer in her name, and solve the issues of all those who offer her their devotion and trust.

Best Time To Visit Sigandur

It is recommended to visit during January to March, to celebrate the festival, but to also escape the heat and subsequent monsoon.

How To Reach Sigandur

Getting to Sigandur Temple, you need to travel across the river Sharavathi, by a launch that is a regular service. It's only INR 1 per head, and you can even take private cars or even buses on the launch to reach Sigandur. Once crossed, there are jeeps available for INR 20 per head that will take visitors to the temple.

temple employee should change their behavior, nice temple but temple committee more interested for marking and money making plans ..we should change our opinion about God
