Shymkent

Shymkent, located in southern Kazakhstan, is the country’s third-largest city and a vibrant hub of industry, commerce, and culture. Situated near the borders of Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, it serves as an important transit point between Tashkent, Bishkek, and northern Kazakhstan. The city’s history stretches back over eight centuries, with its roots dating to the 11th and 12th centuries when it was a significant center for trade and agriculture.

Shymkent has preserved elements of its past, particularly in the southeast, where the streets retain the feel of pre-Russian Shymkent, with quaint wooden houses and a village-like atmosphere. Ordabasy Square and the Independence Monument are must-see spots, reflecting the city’s role in Kazakhstan’s journey toward independence.
