Popularly known as the ‘Pyramids of Assam,’ Charaideo Maidam is a historical tourist destination at the foothills of Nagaland. India's 43rd entry in the UNESCO World Heritage List is the Moidams. The founder of the dynasty, Chaolung Sukhapa, constructed Charaideo as the initial capital of the Ahom rulers in about 1229 CE. The place is best known as the home of Ahom’s ancestral Gods. The large collection of maidams, tumuli, and burial sites of the Ahom kings and queens and other rulers is what makes the area most famous.
Despite the fact that the capital was shifted several times during Ahom's 600-year reign, Charaideo remained an emblem of Ahom dominance. When compared to the Pyramids of Egypt, the 42 tombs of Ahom kings and queens at Charaideo mounds are amazing structures and are a marvel to see. These tombs show the exceptional construction and craftsmanship of Assamese sculptors and masons throughout the Middle Ages. Earlier, Charaideo was thought to be the birthplace of the god "Lankuri," also known as Lord "Shiva."
The biggest appeal of this location is its burial vaults, which portray a plethora of information about the Ahom emperors' lifestyles and traditions. The great architectural feature of the tomb is the octagonal dwarf that encircles the whole tomb. The flowery design created on the underground vaults and the chambers completely covered with clay mounds is enough to captivate you. There is a neighboring park called Sukapha Park that has several amusement activities for children.
