Shashur Monastery is a Buddhist Monastery of the Drugpa Sect, located in Lahaul Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh. It is a three-storey structure located at a distance of 35-40 km from Manali. The literal meaning of "Shashur" in the local language is blue pines, as blue pine trees can be found around the Shashur Monastery.
Perched at an elevation of 600 m above the valley, the panoramic view of the river, mountains and Keylong town from Shashur Monastery is amazing. It was built in the 17th century, following the Mandala concept of a square having four gates with a circle in the centre. The prayer rooms are bedecked with large Thangka paintings and wall paintings, making this place even more worth the visit. Shashur Monastery is praised all over for its bedazzling interiors and architecture. The best time to visit it is in July, during the annual Chham dance festival.
