Sri Krishnadevaraya of the Vijayanagara kingdom, built the majestic gopuram, over 120 feet high, at the entrance to the temple in around the 16th century. According to legend, the temple town derived its name from - Sri meaning spider, Kala meaning serpent and hasti meaning elephant, all of whom worshipped Lord Shiva and attained moksha or nirvana here.
