Peter and Paul Fortress, St. Petersburg Overview

Peter and Paul Fortress in St. Petersburg, Russia, is a historic citadel located on Zayachy (Hare) Island along the Neva River. Founded by Peter the Great in 1703, it is the city's original structure and holds significant historical importance. The fortress is renowned for its architectural design and houses several notable buildings, including the Peter and Paul Cathedral, where many Russian tsars are interred.

Established during the Great Northern War to protect the area from Swedish forces, the fortress was designed by architect Domenico Trezzini and constructed between 1706 and 1740. Although intended as a military stronghold, it never engaged in battle. Instead, it served various roles, notably as a political prison during the 18th and 19th centuries, detaining figures such as writer Fyodor Dostoevsky and political leader Leon Trotsky.
