The town of Ano Syros in Greece appears like a place straight out of a fairytale with its colorful whitewashed houses and narrow winding lanes. While you walk along the lanes of Syros, you will also notice the picturesque views of the South Aegean visible from this town, which is just breathtaking. The town also has several monasteries and museums which are worth visiting.
The reason this town is built in this manner is that it was constructed as a fortress town to protect its population from pirate raids and attacks from enemies. The houses and architecture of historical sites reflect a Venetian and Catholic character, whose roots lie in the ancient Venetian settlement here in the 13th century. It has Cycladic elements to a certain extent as well. You can also visit the Catholic Cathedral of San Georgio, which is at the highest point of the town. Near the coast area of the town, the islands of Paros, Naxos, Tinos, and Delos are visible. The bougainvillea-lined courtyards, traditional taverns and small shops make the sheltered town even more charming.
