Nestled amidst the Himalayas, Arunachal Pradesh boasts numerous stunning lakes, but none are as captivating as Madhuri Lake, also known as Sangetsar Lake or Sangestar Tso. Situated on the route from Tawang to Bum La Pass in Tawang district, near the Indo-China border, this remote lake sits at an altitude of over 3,708 meters (12,165 ft) above sea level. Its pristine beauty, nestled amidst rocky mountains, earned it fame after appearing in the Bollywood movie "Koyla," leading to its colloquial name, Madhuri Lake, after the film's lead actress.
Madhuri Lake, located approximately 30 km northeast of Tawang, offers a mesmerizing sight with its serene waters surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks. Its tranquil ambiance, coupled with upright tree trunks seemingly guarding the lake, creates a surreal atmosphere. The lake holds great significance for both Indian and Tibetan Buddhists, who visit annually for prayer. A true marvel of nature, Madhuri Lake captivates visitors, leaving them spellbound and rejuvenated by its natural splendor.
Note : To visit the Bum La Pass, a special permit is mandatory. These permits can be obtained from the Office of the Deputy Commissioner in Tawang District or from the Indian army cantonment in Tawang town. It's essential to have the army stamp on the permit, as visitors without it will not be permitted to pass through the multiple check posts along the route.
