Martkopi Monastery

Martkopi Monastery, located on the Yalno Ridge near the village of Martkopi, is a serene and historic site. Founded in the 6th century by Assyrian Father Anton Martkopeli, the complex features the Church of the Deity, Virgin Mary, and St. George, alongside a bell tower and the sacred Anton’s Pillar. The site offers a hiking trail leading to picturesque views of the complex. Martkopi Monastery is ideal for a day trip from Tbilisi, with the journey taking just under an hour by car.

The stunning natural surroundings make this site a peaceful retreat. Over the centuries, the monastery has faced numerous invasions and natural disasters but has been faithfully restored multiple times. You can explore the well-preserved churches, the 17th-century bell tower, and the remains of the once-mighty defensive walls.
