Mtatsminda Pantheon, Tbilisi Overview

Mtatsminda Pantheon, located on the slopes of Mtatsminda Mountain in Tbilisi, is a significant cultural and historical site. Established in 1929, the pantheon is the resting place for many of Georgia’s most prominent writers, artists, and public figures. It is located in the St. David’s Church Complex, also known as Mamadaviti. The pantheon has peaceful surroundings and is nestled within volcanic rock formations. You can reach there via the funicular, which runs from the city to Mtatsminda Park, or by walking along scenic pathways from the parking area.

The first notable individuals buried at the pantheon were the Russian diplomat and writer Alexander Griboyedov and his Georgian wife, Princess Nino Chavchavadze. Their burial marked the official opening of the site, which coincided with the centenary of Griboyedov’s death. Since then, the pantheon has become a revered place of honor, with tombs of many celebrated figures such as the poet Vazha-Pshavela, writer Ilia Chavchavadze, and national hero Kakutsa Cholokashvili.
