La Laguna, Tenerife Overview

San Cristóbal de La Laguna (La Laguna) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.. Known for its well-preserved colonial architecture, it was the first non-fortified Spanish city designed using a grid layout. Situated about 10 km from Santa Cruz, La Laguna offers cobblestone streets, vibrant plazas, and historic landmarks like the Cathedral of La Laguna. It is a day trip from Santa Cruz or Puerto de la Cruz.

La Laguna was once the capital of the island. Convents and preserved mansions from the 16th and 17th centuries decorate the town.  It is also the religious and cultural capital of Tenerife as it is home to San Fernando university as well as the Bishop's Palace. The main attraction of the city is the numerous architectural monuments, traditional houses and palaces of the 17th and 18th centuries. The most impressive among its religious buildings are Catedral de Nuestra Senora de los Remedios (Cathedral of La Laguna), Iglesia de Nuestra Senora de la Concepcion (Church of Our Lady of Conception) and Iglesia de Santo Domingo (Saint Dominic Church). There are museums like Friends of the country economic society museum and cathedral's museum that can give you a tour of history and art.
