The Thanjavur Maratha Palace, locally known as Aranmanai, is not just an architectural masterpiece but also the official residence of the Bhonsle family, rulers of Thanjavur from 1674 to 1855. Steeped in history, this palace is a striking blend of Maratha, Nayak, and European architectural styles, making it a cultural gem nestled in the heart of Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu.
Originally built by the rulers of the Thanjavur Nayak kingdom, the palace became the official residence of the Thanjavur Marathas after the fall of the Nayak dynasty. Even after the British annexation of most of the Thanjavur Maratha kingdom in 1799, the Bhonsle family retained control of the palace. Today, it stands as a living testament to their enduring legacy.
The palace complex is an architectural delight, featuring massive halls, wide corridors, multi-storied observation towers, and a shady courtyard. The narrow staircases with short steps, sharp turns, and low ceilings served strategic purposes, acting as defensive measures against enemy advances. The Arsenal Tower (Gooda Gopuram), standing at 192 feet with eight stories, served as a watchtower and armory during the Maratha period.
