Located in the western part of Meghalaya, as the administrative headquarters of the West Garo Hills district, Tura is an eco-tourist hub of the state. It is located 311 Kms from Shillong and 219 Kms from Guwahati in Assam. As opposed to Shillong, which is growing highly multi-cultural, Tura is relatively deeply rooted in its native Garo roots. Tura and the other regions of the district boast of rich undisturbed biodiversity and natural attractions such as waterfalls, caves and rivulets. The primary languages spoken are Garo and English.

The main attraction of this town is the Nokrek National Park which is 12km from the city where various animals such as the leopard, golden cat, wild buffalo, pheasant and many more reside. One may also visit the Rongbang Dar Falls, while a trip to this area, without visiting the Siju caves, would remain somewhat incomplete. Tura Peak, part of a reserve forest is an excellent destination for treks and sightseeing, as it allows panoramic views of the valley from the observatory accompanying it.

Thrilling Tura

The headquarters of the Western Garo Hills, Tura is an unexplored paradise in the western part of Meghalaya. Located in the foothills of the picturesque Tura Peak, the hilly town is home to a diaspora of tribes namely, the Garo. The relaxing greenery, vibrant flora, and fauna of the region attract numerous tourists. Scattered with several waterfalls, Tura is the administrative center of the Garo tribes and one of the biggest cities in Meghalaya.

Natural Habitat

Tura is located in the Garo Hills, which is richly diverse in flora and fauna. The region comprises mainly deciduous and evergreen forests filled with different varieties of trees including the Tura peak which lends its name to the place, insectivorous plants, ferns, rare orchids, and medicinal varieties. The forests also have many fruits trees like plums, peaches, pears, oranges etc. as well as spices such as ginger, turmeric, cinnamon etc. The region is home to many species of animals including - hoolock gibbon, muntjac or the barking deer, golden langur, Himalayan black bear, elephants, leopards etc. The hilly forests also have a large avian population. Some of the birds found here are - the thick-billed green pigeon, red-winged crested cuckoo, grey-headed myna, red jungle fowl and blue-throated barbet.

Day 1: Explore the hilly town. Visit the Botanical Garden, Pelgawari Falls, DC Park and Gangdrakdare.
Day 2: Visit Sasatgre, a Garo village and sip into some rice beer.
Day 3: Enjoy the thick forests in Balpakram or Nokrek.

Tura is somewhat afflicted by its lack of connectivity to other important hubs of the region. The primary mode of transport to the city is by road, connecting it to other important destinations such as Guwahati in Assam and Shillong, Meghalaya's capital. The nearest airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati, at a distance of 200 Kms. Shared or private taxis are the most common mode of transport to reach Tura. Helicopter services run by Pawan Hans are available on a weekly basis from Guwahati and Shillong.

The nearest airport is 200 km away in Guwahati. You need to hire a cab from Guwahati or book a ticket on a bus that regularly runs on this route.

Tura is well connected to cities in the North East via roadways. Regular state-run, as well as private buses, connect Tura to Guwahati, Silchar, Kohima, Aizawl, Itanagar, Nagaland, Agartala, and Shillong. Private cabs are also available on this route.

Tura has no railway station. The nearest railway station, Guwahati Railway Station is around 220 Kms away. Guwahati is linked to important Indian cities through regular trains.
